Video Games 1992: the year 1992 might not have been as shiny as 1991, in terms of technological innovations and titles released. But it still gave us some memorable titles and even completely new genres like RTS and survival horror were created along the way.

Some of the most important Video Games released in 1992

First of all, Ultima Underworld was released. It was the first role-playing game to feature first-person action in a 3D environment, and it introduced technological innovations such as allowing the player to look up and down.

Controversial and violent fighting game, Mortal Kombat was released on the arcades. Unlike Street Fighter, it was focused on more realistic graphics by using realistic digitized graphics and real actors.

If previous games were improvements in their genre, then Dune II – Battle for Arrakis created a new genre. While there were similar games before, it is considered as the first real RTS game with possibilities to create and upgrade units.

Another game that is consider as the first of the kind, Alone in the Dark was released. While still in baby shoes and graphically modest, it is the first in survival horror genre and influenced later Resident Evil franchise.

Hardware 1992

Despite many innovations, 1992 can be seen as the end of one era as well. Already January the 1st, Atari Corporation drops support for the Atari 2600, Atari 8-bit family, Atari 7800, and software for those systems. And in December, the Apple IIgs is discontinued, ending the Apple II series.

In October, Sega releases the Model 1, Sega’s first arcade system board supporting 3D polygon graphics. Namco on the other hand, releases the System 22, an arcade system board that introduces 3D texture mapping and Gouraud shading. Philips releases the CD-i multimedia home console, which became a failure.

The Amiga 1200 computer was released. It was the final lower-cost Amiga model before Commodore’s bankruptcy.
